Bird-watching in Malaysia is an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Covering 380 hectares, Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary stretches over more than 20 kilometres of mudflats along the coastline of Perak State from Pulau Kalumpang, near the Sungei Gula estuary, to Sungei Burung. The sanctuary is part of Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve which spans 40,151 hectares. Annually, Kuala Gula plays host to more than 200,000 avian visitors from more than 50 species.

At Kuala Gula, which has a visitor’s centre run by the Wildlife and National Parks Department, bird-watchers can charter a four-passenger boat for four hours at RM100.

Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary is 38 kilometres from Taiping via the Kamunting exit of the North-South Expressway.

Apart from Kuala Gula, Kuala Selangor Nature Park in Selangor State is another area that attracts large numbers of migratory birds. Having an artificial lake in its centre, the park covers 200 hectares of secondary forests and 95 hectares of mangrove forests. More than 100,000 birds representing more than 30 species come here annually. Kuala Selangor Nature Park is situated one kilometre south of Kuala Selangor; the latter is only 65 km north of Kuala Lumpur.

Down south in Malacca State, Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve offers a unique birding experience.

Paya Indah Wetlands Sanctuary is one of the most easily accessible bird sanctuaries in the country. The lake is the first fresh-water body that migratory birds come upon in Peninsular Malaysia. The WWF Malaysia and Malaysian Nature Society have recorded more than 140 species of birds that are either temporary or permanent residents.

Though the Malay archipelago was never the scene of any epic battle, Malaysia today has several forts that have been left behind by both frontier adventurers and Malay sultans.

Arguably the most famous fort in Malaysia is Fort Cornwallis in George- town on Penang Island. Between 1808 to 1810, convict labour was used to erect a proper fort. The moat which ran round the fort was nine yards wide and about two yards deep.”

In 1871, when the British attacked Kuala Selangor, they took the cannon by steamer to Georgetown.

Apart from the British, the Portuguese had also left behind a famous fort as their legacy.

In the coastal town of Kuala Selangor, Fort Melawati stands as a testimony of the State’s glorious past. Perched atop Melawati Hill which provided a sweeping view of the mouth of the Selangor River, the fort was built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim in 1782. The Dutch overran the fort in 1784, expanded it, and renamed it Fort Altingsburg. Dutch cannons still maintain a lonely vigil over the sea. Built in 1830 and occupied by Sultan Mahmud, it was attacked by Baginda Omar in 1839 who overthrew the sultan. The new sultan rebuilt the fort – supposedly using honey to bind the bricks– and imported cannons from Spain and Portugal to defend it. Among the artifacts found in the fort are a large brass bell called a genta, a flagpole and ancient cannons. Called Kota Johor Lama (Old Johor Fort), it sits on the banks of the Johor River and was built in 1540 by Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah. In 1971, the fort was converted into the Police Museum.

A humbler fort built by Charles Brooke is Fort Sylvia at Kapit.

On Pangkor Island in Perak State, the Kota Belanda (Dutch Fort) basks under the sun at Teluk Gadung. After three years, however, the fort abandoned as the Dutch withdrew from the Malay peninsula.

Ancient Forts in Malaysia

Batu Ferringhi Beach is by far, the most popular beach in Penang, Malaysia.

Since Batu Ferringhi is popular, tourist never failed to visit the site each time. Aside from its beautiful beach, Batu Ferringhi is a prime location for shops, restaurants and its famous night market.

The Toy Museum is Asia’s first and World’s largest toy museum and can also be found in Batu Ferringhi.

Nights during weekends are made wonderful by Batu Ferringhi’s night market. There are small shops selling Batu Ferringhi souvenirs and beach necessities including sarongs, hats, shorts and bathing suits.

In these modern days of economic volatility many future real estate customers in Malaysia and also other regions are thinking about buying a condo as opposed to a single family home. Truth told, the purchase of a condo is in essence the same as buying a single family home. It’s almost always true that a condo in Malaysia will surely cost less than a single family home. A condo maintenance fee is paid by each resident in the condominium complex. Remember to thoroughly read the condo association regulations and rules. Some condominium complexes never allow pets, or do not allow the owner to fix up their condo without obtaining prior consent.3.

Kota Kinabalu, the capital city, has Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park on it’s doorstep. The marine national park is only 20 minutes by boat from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s Capital and Malaysia’s youngest city. All five islands are fringed by coral reefs and home to dive sites and areas suitable for snorkeling. With over 20 different dive sites in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park the visiting diver, or those wanting a try dive, really are spoilt for choice.

Sapi is the second smallest island in the Marine Park. Sapi House reef is probably the most popular dive site in the Marine Park for divers. It is home to a shallow coral reef, artificial reef balls and a sandy bay which is ideal for diver training. On the home reef you’ll see a wide variety of coral reef fish – Damsel Fish, Fusiliers, Barracuda, Parrot Fish, Wrasse, Puffer Fish, Porcupine Fish, Bat Fish – and it’s the most popular reef for visiting Hawksbill Turtles. The house reef is 3m – 18m with a sloping reef.

There are also some good dive sites on the south coast of Sapi – Rons Reef and Rays Reef – both have gentle slopping reefs from 8m – 18m and can be a nice gentle drift dive when the tides changing. Another nice dive site on the west coast is the reef extension know as Clements Reef. Clements Reef has very pretty hard and soft corals interspersed with coral cover boulders and Barrel Sponges. It is 8m on the top of the reef with a gentle sloping reef fringing the dive site down to between 18m – 25m. A nice deeper coral reef site.

Gaya is the largest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Sulug has a ‘tongue shaped’ coral reef protruding from it’s north face.
